New Zealand in Winter
Hi! So, I'm turning down acceptance to Teachers College in New Zealand this year because I got into Teachers College here in Ontario instead (saves a hell of a lot of money, etc) so as consolation, and as a promise I made to myself in choosing Ontario instead, I want to travel to New Zealand anyway this summer/their winter (as well as possibly teach there, or elsewhere overseas, when I'm done training here).

My budget is around 5 grande, but if I could go lower then that would be most excellent. I would be leaving late June and would want to come back in early August or so. I want to see as much of the country as possible, and be immersed in it as much as possible (not just the typical tour guide stuff with old ladies) in that time period.

I am looking for the most economical way to tour but also with the most possibility for adventure and fun times. I've been looking into group tours - the hop on and hop off bus tours - which seem alright, but I just want to know all of my options before I decide on anything. I was even thinking of working out a plan to get a car and a tent down there and just explore things on my own or something, which could be awesome but then I think that may be a bit too crazy right now - I've never even been on a plane!

Advice? Help? Resource suggestions?

New Zealand Immigration & Settlement DVD
Hi there! My husband and I are Americans living in New Zealand for the past 3 years. We went through both the Working Holiday and Residency Visa application process to get here, and I'm happy to answer any questions! We love New Zealand so much that we just produced Go New Zealand: The Immigration and Settlement DVD.

It is a 2 disc DVD set that provides all the need-to-know information about moving to & living in New Zealand. We made this DVD because it's something we were looking for when we were deciding to immigrate, but didn't exist. We have information about New Zealand, visas, education, healthcare, employment & more, and interviews with immigrants and New Zealand experts talking on all these subjects.

I thought this might be of interest to some people in this community. We sell the DVD internationally through our website www.nzimmigrationdvd.com and will be selling it wholesale in and out of New Zealand as well. We are really proud of what we have accomplished and hope it will help many people settle in what we think is an amazing country! Here's a preview video of the DVD:

Thanks!

Fresh meat
Hi all! I just joined, so I thought I'd introduce myself. My name is Elliot, and I live in Phoenix USA. I'm looking to move to New Zealand by March '09 at the earliest, July '09 at the latest. I paid a visit to NZ last year under working holiday, so that option is no longer available to me; however, I'm attempting to enter the country as a skilled migrant in an absolute shortage area - I have a bachelor's degree and I've been an IT professional for well over a decade. I'm pretty well acquainted with the immigration process already (just haven't sent in the application yet), though I haven't yet because I haven't been able to find a solid answer on this - how long does it take from submitting the Expression of Interest to actually having a work visa in my hand? What actually happens once I've been invited to apply for a visa, and how much time do I have to act on the invitation? Does it expire?

Basically, my lease in Phoenix expires in March, and I'm looking for an optimal time to submit my application without incurring additional rental costs in Phoenix. Thanks for any advice!

Spontaneous Dream

As random and impractical as it seems, I would love to end up in New Zealand. I just started a blog (my first one ever) to post useful and fun information and personal experiences. Hopefully, I'll start getting some good insight in feedback. It would be great to give/recieve support from others trying to pull this off.

Here it is: kiwi-dream.livejournal.com/

If you have anything you think would be good to post, let me know. Good luck to everyone!

I am graduating from college in May of 2009 and a seriously considering moving to New Zealand for a year or two. I have a done a little research and it's looking like the Working Holiday Visa would probably be my best bet. How early should I apply? Any tips on the overall process? I toured the country last year for two weeks with friends and have been dying to go back ever since the trip ended. I'm hoping to move to Wellington if all goes as planned. Also, is is possible to rent furnished apartments in New Zealand? I figured if anywhere this would be possible in either Auckland or Wellington. Anything you guys have to say can help me out. Thanks!

D'OH!

I went to the doctor to get my medical and chest x ray done so I can send my application for a working holiday scheme.  Had to get 3 additional passport size pictures, pay $40 to get the medical done, and give 7 phials of blood.

Before I put everything in the envelope I called the New Zealand High Commission in Ottawa to make sure I had everything in order when they informed that I didn't need to do the medical cause I was from a low TB occurence country... damn!

Welcome
I'm hoping this can be of help for people who are interested in going to New Zealand for any particular reasons.  I know I could have used this website when I was getting ready to go.  It might have saved a lot of energy and time if someone who's already gone through all of this could have helped me!
